How to make a photobook

August 18, 2020 by Sophie Kellett

Creating Photobooks is a little more involved than you might expect. Luckily for you, we’ve created this handy guide which will walk you exactly through how to make a photobook for any occasion.

1. Decide on your photos

Decide on your photos

Decide which photos you want to use. Pick an occasion, like a recent wedding, vacation, or event. Pick a time period, like the past year or your childhood…or if it’s a gift, pick photos of your loved ones to include in your photobook.

Make sure to pick good quality photos, with good lighting and sharp quality.

For a good quality print, aim for photos with at least 900 pixels. The bigger the print, the higher the image resolution should be. Keep low-quality photos smaller and make sure that any full-page photos are a higher resolution.

Get your photos organized before you start. It only takes a few minutes and will make it easier to find the photos you want to upload.

2. Pick your photobook type

Pick your photobook type

Choose from hardback cover, leather cover, lay-flat, or mini. Choose a size and number of pages to correspond to how many photos you have.

Hardback photobooks are bound in a glossy hardback cover, which can be personalized with photos and text. This is a great option for a book with a clear theme that you can give a title and cover picture, perfect for displaying on a shelf or coffee table.

A leather photobook is a good choice for anyone looking for a bit of luxury. A popular option for wedding photobooks and gifts, you can upgrade your leather cover with a photo window or satin bow to add a touch of class.

A lay-flat photobook is the best option if you want to include panoramic photos or double-page spreads. The layflat binding means the pages lay flat without a crease, allowing a seamless display from one page to the other. Perfect for travel shots or landscape photography.

If you love carrying photos around with you or sharing photos with friends, then a mini photobook is the one for you. The mini square book is great for Instagram style square photos and can easily fit into your handbag or pocket. Perfect for taking with you to show your loved ones.

3. Pick your design

Pick your design

Choose from 100s of layouts and themes to create your unique photobook. With themes for every occasion, from weddings, graduations, birthdays, Christmas, and more, plus 100s of cool layouts with room for captions and customization, the choice is yours.

4. Upload your photos

Upload your photos

Upload your photos from your phone, laptop, social media, or online storage. If you are short on time, you can upload all your photos in one go and they’ll be automatically filled into your photobook, leaving you to just add the finishing touches.

Think about the order you want your photos to go in and have this in mind when uploading photos so that your photobook tells a story.

If you prefer to curate your album and spend a bit more time, then you can place your photos manually and make sure each page is perfect.

Depending on the layout you choose, you can have one photo per page or create a collage with several photos per page – it’s totally personalized to you!

5. Customize it with text and clipart

Customize it with text and clipart

Now for the fun bit! Once your photos are uploaded and put in place, it’s time to get creative and personalize it!

You can add text in different fonts to each page. Opt for a larger text box to give the story behind the photo, or if you prefer to let the photos do the talking, you can add a small textbox with the date and location.

Customize the background with different patterns and colors or leave it plain – it’s your choice!

For a fun touch, add clip art stickers to add a little bit of personality to each page.

6. Tell a story

Tell a story

Tell your story. Whether it’s the story of your summer, your wedding day, a celebration of your firstborn’s first year, or just the story of your life in pictures, a photobook is a snapshot of your story and your memories to treasure forever.

Make use of captions to make sure you remember each special moment and create a keepsake that will stay in your family for years to come.

7. Share your story

Share your story

Now your photobook is complete, all that’s left is to complete your order and wait for it to arrive! You’ll have so much fun flicking through your favorite moments printed in HD and bound in a special keepsake book. Keep it on the coffee table for visitors to flick through or give as a gift to your loved ones.

There’s no feeling quite like looking back on happy memories with your loved ones. Memories are made to be shared, so get your photobook out to share your happiest moments with your friends and family. And don’t forget to share this blog if anyone else needs help with how to make a photobook.
