How to Make a Photo Collage

November 11, 2020 by Sophie Kellett

When you have lots of photos you love, a photo collage is a great way to celebrate each little moment in one project. Making a photo collage can be tricky when you don’t know where to start, so lucky for you we’ve simplified it into 6 easy steps.

1. Choose a theme

Choose a theme

Before starting your photo collage, it’s a good idea to pick a theme for your photos. Whether it’s a recent vacation, your wedding day, memories with your kids or a gift for a loved one, when you decide on a theme for your collage, each picture will form part of a story and work together.

2. Choose a layout

Choose a layout

You might want to pick the photos for your collage next, but it’s best to choose your layout before deciding on your photos. This way, you’ll know what size and exactly how many photos you need to create the collage design you want.

There are all sorts of layouts you can use, from a simple rectangle shape, to heart shapes or circular. If you’re creating your picture collage on paper, you can draw out the structure you’re going to use using a pencil. If that sounds like a lot of effort, then there’s plenty of collage maker tools online that you can use instead!

You can create a collage with 100s of different collage templates online using the Printerpix creation tool.

3. Pick your photos

Pick your photos

Once you’ve decided on your theme and layout, it’s time for the fun bit…pick your photos! Choose a variety of pictures that work well together.

Choose happy memories that will make you smile or the person you are making your collage for smile…and have fun looking back at happy times while you pick your photos.

If you’re making it online, you can upload your photos from your device, but if you’re making a paper collage then you’ll need to get your photos printed.

4. Make!

Make

Making it on paper? You’ll need photo prints, scissors, paper and glue. Cut your photo prints into the desired shape and stick into the template you’ve drawn on paper. For best results, use thick paper, and if you want a colored or patterned background then opt for colored paper. You might want to play around with the layout before you commit to gluing your prints onto paper.

For a less messy option, you can make your photo collage online. Just upload the photos you want from your device and fill in the template. You can move pictures around, resize, crop and try different combinations until you find the perfect arrangement for your photo collage.

5. Customize it

Customize it

A collage with just photos would be boring. Add decoration like text, drawings, emojis and clipart shapes to give a bit of personality to your picture collage.

With Printerpix, you have the freedom of unlimited personalization and 100s of decorative options. You can add text, customize the background, add decorative icons and more.

6. Print!

Print

If you’ve created your collage on paper, then you’re good to go! You could scan it to get a digital copy or frame it if it’s going to be a gift.

If you’ve created your collage online, then you want to print it and create a special keepsake. At Printerpix, you can print your collage design onto anything you like…canvas prints, cosy blankets, greeting cards, cushions, mugs and much more! Just pick the product you’d like, then make your collage in the creation tool.

Now you can start creating your own photo collage. The perfect way to celebrate the memories shared with loved ones – start yours today!
