6 helpful tips on how to keep warm this winter

February 16, 2023 by Trish

Winter feels like it’s never ending this year, but we’re almost getting to Spring. But even then, it is still important to keep ourselves warm and be vigilant when it comes to our unpredictable weather.

Here are some suggestions for staying warm this Winter, ranging from budget-friendly options to emergency measures to keep in mind.

1. Clothing with multiple layers

Make sure you have quick access to warm clothing such as heavy sweaters, jackets, scarves, gloves, and socks when you start to feel cold. Remember to take off any outerwear if you engage in physical activity that causes you to sweat.

2. Establish your indoor campsite.

Choose a small room in your house (preferably upstairs if you do have upper floors) and construct a camping tent or a cozy blanket fort. This activity can be a delightful experience for both you and your children. A smaller room heats up more rapidly and having a tent inside can trap the heat and keep you comfortable.

3. Blankets and sleeping bags

Snuggle up in a blanket, snuddie, or sleeping bag to stay warm when you are stationary or unable to move. If you need extra warmth, add another blanket to your setup.

4. Mobile heater

Although they are a major source of energy consumption, portable heaters can be a lifesaver in an emergency situation. They come in various sizes, ranging from those capable of warming a whole room to those as compact as a portable radio.

5. Keep all doors closed

Maintain all entryways shut. Implement weather stripping to eliminate gaps in windows and doors, preserving the warmth inside and preventing cool air from entering. If weather stripping is not available, cover the door with a heavy fabric and close the drapes to prevent drafts.

6. Hand warmers when you’re outdoors

Sure, bundling up is a must when venturing outside. But for added warmth, hand warmers might be worth considering. They come in rechargeable electric or air activated varieties and produce heat to keep you extra cozy. Simply place them in your pockets or gloves and enjoy the heat on your hands. This is especially useful for those who struggle with cold hands in the office.

Another suggestion to try is to place your coat and scarf on a heated radiator before leaving.

Bonus Tips

  • Make sure to keep the emergency contacts for your gas and electric provider accessible at all times.
  • In addition to keeping you warm, a microwavable heat pad and a hot water bottle can also provide relaxation and relieve muscle pain. These heat pads are available with different scented fillings like lavender, which can enhance the calming experience.
  • While hot drinks have been scientifically proven to not help much in keeping you warm, it is still beneficial to keep yourself hydrated. Always keep a flask of hot water nearby when you need it. Make drinking more fun with a personalize photo mug or magic mug.
  • Upper floors are always warmer as heat travels up, so if you decide to stay warm, occupy a room upstairs.
  • Keep active and exercise.
